Floral Notes

Prompt: Write a poem that spans a single day, beginning with sunrise and ending with sunset.

When the ground wants to swallow you whole
When the world is at your back while you stare into the abyss
When heartbreak feels permanent
When the breeze changes direction and you catch the scent of death

Sweet, sickening, and colorful
The vines twine up stone
Thorns keep you at bay
Protected and precious but you pick them anyway

A shadow is cast by the sunlight
The torment of day’s eve waning
Cries from the streets echo in these floral notes
